Teaching Kids Smart Money Habits: The Story Behind Zara’s Money Journey
The Story Behind Zara's Money Journey: Why I Wrote a Money Book for Kids
Most children's books about money fall into one of two traps: they're either too abstract for a five-year-old to follow, or they're thinly-disguised sales pitches dressed up as stories. When I started working on Zara's Money Journey, I wanted to avoid both.
Where the Idea Came From
The starting point wasn't a business plan — it was a simple observation. Kids ask surprisingly sharp questions about money. "Why can't we buy that?" "Why do you have to wait for payday?" These questions are usually brushed off with a quick "because," but they're actually the perfect opening for a real conversation — if you have the right way to have it.
Designing Zara
Zara isn't a perfect character who always makes the right choice. She gets tempted to spend everything at once. She has to wait for something she really wants. That tension — between wanting something now and understanding why waiting sometimes makes sense — is the emotional core of the book, not just a "moral lesson" tacked onto the end.
Each scene was built around a real situation a child might recognize: a toy at a store, a gift from a relative, a choice between two things when you can only afford one. The illustrations were designed to carry as much of the story as the text itself, since younger readers often "read" pictures before they read words fluently.
Why a Book, Specifically
Financial literacy curricula exist for teenagers and adults, but almost nothing exists for the 4-8 age range in a format kids actually enjoy. Picture books are one of the few formats where a child will voluntarily revisit the same content multiple times — which matters, because financial habits are built through repetition, not a single conversation.
Where Things Stand Now
Zara's Money Journey is now available, and the response from parents reading it with their kids has shaped how we think about future titles in the same series — stories that tackle one real-world skill at a time, written so kids actually want to read them again.
